South side of the river

フォトジェニックこみち

Not fully developed as a tourist site, Kawara-machi still retains a picturesque townscape lined with houses that have traditional lattice door structures. One street south from Kawara-machi is a backstreet extending eastwards from the lawn square full of photographic opportunities. This backstreet offers outstanding locations to photograph people, animals, and many interesting buildings including ones that were settings for an anime story, along with Koshindo Temple, famous for a statue of monkey made of clay tile, the round-windowed Water Experience and Learning Museum that brings out the atmosphere of the Showa Period decades ago, the Nawa Insect Museum, and more.

North side of the river

The ukai town has numerous alleyways connecting the houses of the Usho and boatmen with the river. In particular, there is one alleyway local young people call, "Cat Alley" that is a popular spot for taking photos. The scenery of the river and the mountain seen from these narrow lanes stands in sharp contrast with each other.
